Lowery Gardens Pathway

Location: In Edworthy Park, on the south shore of the Bow River between Crowchild and Sarcee Trails

The Lowery Gardens Pathway is situated between Crowchild Trail and Edworthy Park. This 5 kilometer pathway meanders through what was once a market garden in the City’s earliest days.

Bowness Park Fountain

Location: West of 85th Street on 48th Avenue NW
Date of Completion: 1988
Cost: $20,500.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary
The park was originally donated to the City of Calgary in 1917 by John Hextall one of the founding fathers of the Town of Bowness. In 1927 the first fountain was installed in the lush green park. However, by the late 1960’s the fountain was removed. It wasn’t until 1988 with the help of an anonymous donor a new fountain was installed to replace the old one.

Heritage Escarpment

Location: On the east side of the Elbow River below the southwest community of Parkhill
Date of Completion: 1992
Cost: $350,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Elbow River Conservancy
The Heritage Escarpment consists of pathways and a variety of native plants that are planted along Elbow River by Conservancy volunteers.

Outwest Park Development

Location: 9th Avenue 8th Street SE
Date of Completion: 1992
Cost: $100,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Inglewood Community Association Outwest Park can be found in Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, Inglewood. Rick Silas made the wooden sculpture that is a replica of the mountains just west of Calgary. The park is mostly self-maintaining with the occasional volunteer helping out.

Grave's Bridge Landing

Location: Under Glenmore Trail SE along the Bow River
Date of Completion: 1993
Cost: $160,000.00

This project restored the area under the bridge adding new canoe docks, a boat launch, and re-naturalization of the river bank vegetation.

Sapper's Bridge

Location: Along Beaver Dam Flats near Lynnview Road & 62 Avenue SE
Date of Completion: 1993
Cost: $40,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary, River Valleys Committee, 33rd Engineer Squadron of the Canadian Armed Forces
This majestic bridge connects Beaverdam Flats to the main shore at Lynnwood. The bridge is made out of timber and was built by the 33rd Engineer Squadron of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves.

Fish Creek to Glenmore Pathway

Location: Along the east side of 37th Street SW
Date of Completion: 1995
Cost: $400,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Southwest Community Association This popular pathway provides a link between the Glenmore Reservoir, Elbow River Pathway System, and Fish Creek Provincial Park. The pathway provides a safe and environmentally friendly way to enjoy the parks and recreation areas along both pathways. It also provides links to the communities of Woodbine, Cedarbrae and Braeside.

Memorial Drive Tree Planting

Location: Between 10th Street & Crowchild Trail NW
Date of Completion: 1995
Cost: $50,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Royal Canadian Legion
The funds raised by the Royal Canadian Legion were used to plant trees along this popular stretch of path and roadway.

Tom Campbell's Hill

Location: Along the east side of Bridgeland/Riverside Community, North of Memorial Drive NE
Date of Completion: 1995
Cost: $600,000.00

Tom Campbell’s Hill contains over 30 acres of natural area parkland that was restored. The major attraction of the hill is the spectacular views of the Calgary skyline and the mountains to the south and west of the city.

Colonel's Island

Location: Along 34th Avenue & Rideau Road SW
Date of Completion: 1996
Cost: $22,000.00
Partners: Citizen Donation
This .25 acre parcel of parkland was donated by Mrs. J. Tidswell in memory of her late husband Lieutenant Colonel J.E.H. Tidswell.

Erlton/Roxboro Escarpment

Location: East side of Elbow River above the southwest Community of Roxboro
Date of Completion: 1996
Cost: $ 200,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Erlton/Roxboro Community Association Re-naturalization and pathway development.

Fish Creek Boat Launch

Location: In Fish Creek Park in the south east
Date of Completion: 1996
Cost: $30,000.00

A boat/canoe launch and parking lot was constructed to handle emergency and recreational users. It is located near to the bridge on Highway 22X.

James H. Gray Park

Location: On Patterson Hill Crescent SW
Date of completion: 1996
Cost: $10,000.000
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary
Trees and shrubs were planted in this small park along the crescent in memory of James H. Gray who once owned the ridge and lived on the site.

Sue Higgins Pedestrian Bridge

Location: In the southeast neighbourhood of Douglasdale
Date of Completion: 1996
Cost: $1,800,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and the City of Calgary
The bridge was named after Alderman Sue Higgins who was the primary fundraiser for the project.

Wildlands Park

Location: On 9th Avenue & 24th Street SE
Date of Completion: 1996
Cost: $ 2,000,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and Rotary Club of Calgary
Before adding the trees and park the land was an old oil refinery. The park received its first tree on May 29th, 1993 when the tree planting ceremony began. The park is now 78-acres in size featuring more than 3,400 trees.

Stoney trail Bridge Re-vegetation

Location: Between the TransCanada Highway and Crowchild Trail NW
Date of Completion: 1997
Cost: $15,000.00

In 1993 the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta entered into an agreement to construct the Stoney Trail Bridge connecting the TransCanada Highway to Crowchild Trail Northwest. Stoney Trail is Calgary’s largest river valley crossing at a total 476 metres. Four sites were selected for the re-vegetation; two of the sites are located at either end of the pedestrian underpass and two sites are directly off the trail facing east and west. The land received new seeding and native plants. Two wetlands were also preserved along the Stoney Trail near Crowchild Trail.

Airport Pathway

Location: In the northeast near the Calgary International Airport
Date of Completion: 1998
Cost: $ 190,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary, private citizen Don Skinner, and Calgary International Airport Authority
The pathway starts at the Airport terminal and runs parallel along airport lands on the west side of Barlow Trail. The park ends at the intersection of 19th street and McKnight Boulevard. The pathway was designed to enhance the land surrounding the Airport and to provide a recreational area for all Calgarians.

Patterson Homestead Park

Location: In the southeast Community of McKenzie Lake on the east side of the Bow River on the Regional Pathway
Date of Completion: 1998
Cost: $300,000.00
Partners: Citizen Donation
The park was donated to the City of Calgary in 1997 by Bob Patterson whose family farmed the land in the late 1800’s. The park includes natural and manicured areas, and displays the original horse-drawn plough that first broke the prairie soil on that land.

Evamy Ridge Park

Location: Along Hillcrest Avenue overlooking the Mission district in southwest Calgary
Date of Completion: 2002
Cost: $150,000.00
Partners: Parks Foundation, Calgary and the Evamy Family
Evamy Ridge is located in Mount Royal and is dedicated to the late Michael Evamy of Calgary. The park includes a pathway, seating area, and gardens.
