Parks Foundation Calgary is proud to announce the East Calgary Greenway Project

Throughout the month of November and early December, the middle section of the East Calgary Greenway (16th Avenue NE to McKnight Blvd NE) was being constructed by Wilco Contractors. Only 600 meters of asphalt pathway need to be constructed to complete the first section of the East Calgary Greenway. Prior to the snow fall many pathway users were already seen using the newest pathway system in the City. Once weather conditions improve, construction along the middle section will continue.

The other two sections of the East Calgary Greenway (17th Avenue SE to 16th Avenue NE and McKnight Blvd NE to Airport Trail NE) will be tendered shortly for completion in summer 2010.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

For life-long health, pathway-based recreation is the most broadly used and effective type of recreation. It is accessible to people of all physical abilities and incomes. Calgary East and North East areas comprise over 25% of Calgary's population, for whom there is currently no connective open spaces that offers safe recreational pathway routes separate from roadways.

The East Calgary Greenway is a new way- a new path for citizens and government to become partners in reducing our impact on our environment, improving recreation opportunities and advancing urban green infrastructure development. The Greenway is a long-term plan, the benefits from which will be realized by generations to come.
