Bench Dedication Program
Through our bench program friends and families can create a dedication or memorial by placing a public bench in one of Calgary’s numerous parks or pathways. Each bench carries a different story through the words engraved on the plaque. These lovely cedar benches with their bronze plaques serve as a lasting reminder or a timeless gift to a loved one.
Thanks to the numerous donations over the years, there are 750 dedication benches throughout our city. The benches are an attractive and useful addition to our recreational areas and are much appreciated by the many citizens who visit and use Calgary’s parks and pathways every day.
Each year dedication benches are donated and installed throughout the City of Calgary parks and pathways by citizens and organizations in memory of loved ones, friendships and special events.
Benches
The cost of the bench depends on the length of time it will be maintained. There are two options to choose from: $3,500.00 for 10 years of maintenance or $7,000.00 for 40 years of maintenance. The price includes the cost of the bench and plaque, installation of the bench and plaque, maintenance and administration costs. The IPE wood bench comes with a five year warranty on the finish. These benches will be reviewed every three to four years for refurbishing. The cedar benches previously sold are refurbished every two years.
Bench options are renewable after the 10 or 40-year period chosen has expired. Prices are subject to change.
Bench Placement
Benches can be placed in any city park in Calgary, or along the river pathway system, with prior approval. As the number of benches in parks increases, the city will limit the amount allowed in each area. Please ask if your location is still available at the start of the application process.
Installation
From the time of the receipt of the donation in full, it will take approximately 10-12 weeks to complete the installation of a bench. If there is brickwork involved in the installation, more time will be required to complete the installation. Installations during the winter months are not possible.
Tax Receipts
All donations are to be made out to the Parks Foundation Calgary in advance of placing orders for benches and plaques. More than one person can donate to a bench. Individual tax receipts can be issued for donations of $25.00 or more to the donor whose name appears on the cheque or credit card. Cash donations can also be tax receipted when accompanied by the donor name and address.
